Tobacco and the law

  • Tobacco must have a health warning on its packet and note of its tar and nicotine content.
  • It's against the law to sell tobacco to young people aged 18 and under. The maximum fine for doing so is £1,000.

 Alcohol and the law

  • It is an offence to give alcohol to any child under five years of age, even at home. 
  • Under 14s are allowed in a bar or pub if they're with an adult, but the bar must have a children's certificate. 
  • Under 14s are allowed in a bar or pub if they do not drink. 
  • The law says 16 to 18 year olds can drink beer, cider or perry (pear cider) with a meal at a restaurant or area in a pub specifically designed for dining.

 Solvents and the law

  • It is illegal to sell butane gas lighter refills to anyone under the age of 18.  
  • It is against the law to sell solvents to under 18s if they suspect that they are sniffing.
