What to do if someone faints or loses consciousness

What should I do if someone faints or goes unconscious?

  • Put them in the recovery position (see below).
  • Check their breathing - you might need to do mouth-to-mouth resuscitation.
  • Dial 999 and ask for an ambulance.
  • Keep them warm (but not hot).
  • If they are going in and out of consciousness then don't try to give them anything to drink as they might choke on it.

How to put someone in the recovery position

If someone has collapsed, conscious or unconscious, but is still breathing, the best thing to do is put them in the recovery position.

Don't put someone in the recovery position if you think they might have a head or neck injury - leave them as they are until help arrives.

  • Turn them onto their front with their head sideways towards you.
  • Bend their arm and leg on the side nearest you. Place the hand of the bent arm under their cheek (to keep the head in a tilted position and the airway lengthened).
  • Straighten their other arm and leg.
  • Stay with the person and keep checking their breathing.
  • Get someone to dial 999 and ask for an ambulance.
